It's not been very well advertised, but the Energy Saving Trust has setup a £400 grant for homeowners to replace the least efficient boilers in the UK with the most efficient ones. Moving from a G to an A rated boiler will save the average household £235 per year in gas. Gas prices are likely to continue to rise so this saving should increase each year. Homeowners who own a boiler with an energy efficiency rating of G can apply for the grant through the energy saving trust website. In most cases, a G rated boiler is one with a permanent pilot light, i.e. the gas is always being burnt. Most gas boilers over 15 years old are G rated. Most oil boilers over 25 years old are G rated. The grant is only open to the first 125,000 households that apply so you need to apply quickly.
Since our launch in January 2009 we've built up a reliable network of builders, electricians, plasterers, kitchen fitters, gas fitters that we work with regularly. We understand from first hand experience how hard it is to find decent tradespeople. We are now able to provide quotations on any home renovation or maintenance work. To get a quote for your project, please use the details at the top of the page to get in touch.
We visited a customer's house on the evening of the 23rd February. During the night of the 22nd the customer's hall ceiling fell down due to a water leak from the central heating system. The customer had noticed that the combi-boiler pressure gauge had been dropping over the recent weeks. It's normal for the pressure to change when the temperature of the water in the system changes. The hotter the temperature the higher the pressure. To monitor pressure drops, you need to read the pressure from the gauge when the system is cold. If, over a series of cold readings, you notice the pressure dropping, this is a sure sign you have a leak in your central heating system. Either tackle it yourself or give us a call, but don't delay - it doesn't take much water to bring a plasterboard ceiling down.
